Family Service

Family Service opportunities are instilled throughout the programs of the Child & Family Institute of Aptos. New Horizons School for Homeless Children is the primary focus of the service activities.

Family Service has been shown to be a vital way to pass on faith from generation to generation. Children and youth are greatly influenced by what they see in the lives of others, especially parents and other family members. Merton Strommen, founding director of the Search Institute, reviewed the data that eventually became reported in the Effective Christian Education study and noted that adults who were assessed to have a more mature faith (those who had a clearer sense of a gracious God in their lives and the desire to serve the needs of others) tended to be those who could remember doing acts of service with their parents when they were children. The data suggests that family service projects have a life-long impact on children.
